Architettura Romantica in the Ukraine
Historical monuments and the magic of wedding

  • 2 cities
  • 22 couples
  • 10 years

Wedding in the mass consciousness is associated with magic, in which the groom is compared to a handsome prince on a white horse and the bride sees herself as a princess.  And what about architecture at the picture from the wedding? It is intended to play an idyll: a palace or castle in which the weds will live, the quintessence of happiness — architettura romantica, of which we present here the first exhibition.
The choice of architectural background conveys the aspirations and ambitions of the couple or one of the newlyweds. In a selection from Kiev and Odessa 2012-2022 we can verify different vectors: the search for identity in popular and ancient architecture, the love for the opulency of the baroque, the symbolism of the Art Nouveau forms and the mysticism of ruins, the ubiquitous URBEX.

Among the most popular, there are Neo-Gothic buildings - which in the mass consciousness, thanks to films, cartoons and computer games, are associated with fabulousness and magic.

Wedding photography is a popular creative industry that has exploded over the past fifteen years in the countries of the former Soviet Union.  It is based on the rite formed in the 1970s of the newlyweds who went around the places of interest of the city after registering in the registry office: the tour included a visit to the World War II memorial and to more presentable places in the city. In the 2000s, photographers began to expand the traditional selection of locations for shooting, using their knowledge, offering, among other things, thematic shots, proposing locations based on the character, hobby of the newlyweds.

Thanks to this, the spouses get to know their cities better and then present particular romantic places to their friends on their social networks. Here we present works of 12 photographers from Odessa and Kiew. Thanks to their artistry and professionalism, we can glimpse this unique moment of two dozen young families

The cultural heritage of Ukraine includes monuments from different eras, from antiquity to the present day.  Some of them are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, of which the St. Sophia Cathedral and the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra are presented in this exhibition.

But here you will also see the candidates for inclusion - the Church of St. Andrew and the historic center of Odessa with the Opera House.
The exhibition can be viewed as a celebration of fundamental social rites in times of trouble and catastrophe.
